A homeowner association (HOA) is an organization in a subdivision that enforces rules and guidelines for the properties and residents. Those who purchase property within an HOA's jurisdiction automatically become members and are required to pay dues, which are known as HOA fees. HOA members are the residents of the subdivision and the association is run by a board of directors. Fees collected are used to pay for utilities, security, administrative costs, deed restriction enforcement, common area maintenance and facility upkeep. An HOA's main goal is to increase property values in the community.
